Job Description: Golden Openings is a shop that organizes grand openings, ground-breakings and special events. We ship grand opening supplies worldwide daily, organize local events and have franchises and partnerships of Golden Openings in other states.
Background: I was born and raised in Marshalltown and graduated from Iowa State University. Out of college, I worked at a chamber of commerce and discovered a niche business in grand openings. I have owned and operated a business for 11 years.
Notable achievements: In Minnesota, I was named emerging entrepreneur of the year for Business Week magazine. I have also written and published two books: "The Grand Opening Guide Book" and "The Ribbon Cutting Guide Book".
Why I do what I do: I truly enjoy assisting other new business owners in getting out of the "starting gate" with energy. Golden Openings averages two events per week, year around and provides thousands of items that make businesses open successfully. There is never a dull moment.
How I give back to the community: I believe in supporting the community in what free time I do have and tie as many of our grand openings and events to some sort of fund raiser for a good cause. I also volunteer at my children's school, helping host their classroom parties - donate decorations, games and food.
Words to live by: "Anybody, anytime, anyplace, anywhere can do anything they want if they want to do it bad enough" - Walt Disney.
Best business book I've read lately: "Oh the Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss. I am also writing a third book " The Ground Breaking Guide".
The best place in central Iowa to entertain clients or colleagues: Rube's Steakhouse - a big salad bar, cook-your-own steaks and chicken, good drinks, and fun to be had by all.
One things I would change about the Des Moines area: More tradeshows and events that incorporate several groups of networking professionals in one room or setting. The different chambers need to meet with other chambers, the BNI networking groups need to mingle with the Lions Club, and so forth.
What Iowa can do to attract more people like me: Make it stop snowing, please! This winter has been much more like Minnesota weather - snow and cold from October to March.
My mentor: My father, after years of childhood slavery, building our 15,000-square-foot home in Marshalltown. Board by board and brick by brick, he taught me no task is insurmountable.
My leadership philosophy: As an effective leader, one must be self-assured, knowledgeable, and proficient in culture in which you are a part. A good leader is constantly learning and must be able to lead as well as to accept advice when warranted.
If I could do something else, I would: What would I do if I could do something else: It might be fun to be Reese Witherspoon or Julia Roberts for a day, but the acting life and Hollywood lifestyles would get old fast. I am pretty sure I am living my dream job.
