Hidden Costs That Change the Math
Reorder frequency matters more than most buyers account for. A printed ribbon replaced annually across a five-year program costs five setups and five freight cycles.
Waste matters too. Woven ribbon holds tolerance well and produces less unusable material at the roll ends. Print registration drift on long runs generates scrap that gets billed to somebody.
And there is the reverse-side question. Woven ribbon shows a mirrored version of the design on the back, which many brands consider a feature. Printed ribbon shows blank white or blank color, which looks unfinished on anything that twists — lanyards especially.

Design Rules for Woven Ribbon
Weaving imposes constraints that printing does not. Design accordingly and the result looks intentional; ignore them and the result looks like a compromise.
Minimum text height runs about 3/16 inch on standard thread counts. Below that, letterforms lose their counters and read as smudges. Serifs and thin script strokes suffer first.
Color count drives cost directly. Each additional color adds shuttle complexity and slows the loom. Two to four colors is the practical sweet spot.
Gradients do not weave. Neither do soft shadows or photographic images. Convert artwork to flat spot colors before submitting, and expect to simplify fine detail.
The Strike-Off Sample
Never approve a woven program without a physical strike-off — a short production sample woven on the actual loom with the actual yarn.
Screen renderings misrepresent woven color badly. Yarn color reads differently once interlaced, because adjacent threads optically blend and the weave structure changes how light scatters.
Budget two to three weeks for the strike-off cycle. Rushing it is the most common cause of a rejected production run.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Buying woven for a single-day event. A grand-opening ribbon gets cut once. Print it, save the money, and put the difference into staging.
Submitting artwork with gradients. Weaving produces flat color fields. Gradient artwork gets flattened by the mill, usually not the way you would have chosen.
Setting text too small. Anything under 3/16 inch tall will not resolve. Redraw the wordmark larger or drop it from the ribbon.
Approving color from a screen. Monitor color and woven yarn color diverge substantially. Require a physical strike-off every time.
Ignoring the reverse side. Woven ribbon shows a mirror image on the back. On a twisting lanyard, that mirror is visible half the time, so design for it.
Underestimating lead time. Four to eight weeks is normal for woven, and rush charges rarely compress it below three. Order against your event date, not your hope.
