Golden Openings raises $25,000 for John Stoddard Cancer Center
Cutting Out Cancer in our Community
November 19th, 2015
Golden Openings organized more than 85 local businesses and organizations to create the event “A Golden Opportunity to Cut-Out Cancer in Our Community,” for John Stoddard Cancer Center. The program was a celebration of Tom Carder, who lost his battle with brain cancer earlier this year. Tom was the former president and founder of the Des Moines-based company, Quality Manufacturing. With nearly 400 attendees, the event raised more than $25,000 to support the Cancer Care Coordinator/Oncology Nurse Navigator Program.
Organizations like John Stoddard, and many others, allow us to hold on to the possibility of hope when a diagnosis of cancer and other diseases are given. By supporting the research around innovative medications, we have the power to open up doors. Between 1988 and 2010, cancer patients were able to live a collective 23 million years longer due to new treatments. In addition, 80 percent of the increased life expectancy of cancer patients can be credited to advanced treatments.
Specialty medicines not only restore hope, they also provide an unparalleled impact to America’s healthcare system. With the extraordinary resources necessary to bring new drugs to the marketplace, policy leaders at all levels must continue to create an environment that supports innovation.
Research into cancer-fighting medications is non-negotiable. This is our only defense to stop this disease from ripping families and communities apart.
